Multilingual Glossary of carbon-related forest terminology

 

 

 

 

The storage of carbon in forest ecosystems has received special attention in the past years. Successful accomplishment of agreements like the Kyoto Protocol (1997) on a global basis requires common understanding and their implementation at national level. However, such agreements often contain terms that are not clearly defined or accepted at national level.

 

For the sake of a better mutual understanding at the international level, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (IUFRO) has compiled a multilingual glossary on ‘carbon in forests’, which highlights the terms that may cause confusion because of diverging national interpretations.

 

The glossary contains approximately 300 terms and is operational in the four official IUFRO languages: English, French, Spanish and German.

 

The glossary work has been generously supported by the Austrian National Bank (OeNB) and has been developed according to the principle forestry experts work on their own technical language. It is the result of the cooperation of a considerable number of forest-related organizations and experts around the world.
